36 Lyndon Johnson

On March 15, 1965, President Johnson delivered this speech in response to recent events in Selma, Alabama. Here, civil rights protesters were brutally beaten on “Bloody Sunday.” His speech inspired Congress to pass key legislation that protected voting rights for African Americans. As students read, they should take notes on how Johnson uses rhetoric to persuade his audience. This text is for 10th grade students.
