Phillis Wheatley Africa To America

Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753-1784) was the first published African-American woman poet. After being transported from West Africa to America, she was sold into slavery. Later purchased by the Wheatley family, she was taught to read and write, and learned several languages. Wheatley’s poems often explore her Christian values, celebrate America, and comment on the current events of the time. This poem is for grade 11 students. As you read, take notes on Wheatley’s form, and consider how and why she emphasizes certain words. ‘On Being Brought from Africa to America’ can be found in the public domain.
