Emancipation Day Celebration 1900 06 19

The first since the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth has officially become a US National holiday. This day celebrates black independence and the end of slavery in the United States. Efforts for this day to become a national holiday have been consistent for many years prior to its signing into law in 2021. This text is for middle and high school readers.
