In his 1796 “Farewell Address”, the first president of the United States, George Washington, declined serving a third term. Additionally, he warned America about foreign political attachments and the chaos that could come from political party divisions. As students read, they should take note on Washington’s reasons for declining the third term and how he develops his central idea. This text is for 12th grade students.
