Solomon Northup was an American abolitionist and author of the memoir Twelve Years a Slave. A freeborn man from New York, Northup was the son of a formerly enslaved man and a free African-American woman. As a professional violinist, he traveled to Washington, D.C. in 1841, where he was drugged, kidnapped and sold into slavery. This text is for 6th-12th grade students.
